Batavia's Local Government

The City of Batavia government isn’t that much different from when it was first established in 1850. At that time, town meetings were held so that residents could have their say about how Batavia should be run. In 1891 there were 1,800 residents who elected John H. Miller as the first mayor. Today the City of Batavia still has this form of government. A mayor, city clerk, city treasurer and 14 alderpersons are elected to serve staggered four-year terms. The City of Batavia is known for the quality and professionalism of the services it provides to residents and visitors alike, while keeping the tax impact for the residents to a minimum.

Refuse Collection and Recycling The City has a contract with Veolia Waste Services for weekly garbage and recyclables pickup. The City of Batavia works with Kane County to recycle electronic items. Residents of Batavia, as well as small businesses located within the City, may drop off certain items at the Public Works building. Kane County also coordinates recycling of household hazardous waste and electronic items. More information is available on the Kane County website co.kane.il.us/Environment.
